"Idle money" is any money you are not spending this week: your emergency fund, money for next month's rent, savings for a goal. Leaving it in a regular big-bank savings account is safe, but it barely earns. BPI's Regular Savings, for example, pays 0.0625% per year and only when your daily balance is at least PHP 5,000. On PHP 100,000 that is about PHP 62.50 a year before tax.
Several digital banks and e-wallet savings products currently pay 2% to 4% base rates. The difference is real, but so are the conditions. Here is a simple way to decide where each peso goes.
Step 1: Know what is a deposit and what is not
An e-wallet balance, like money sitting in your GCash or Maya wallet, is not a bank deposit. The savings features inside these apps are different: GSave is a CIMB Bank account and Maya Savings is held by Maya Bank. Those are bank deposits.
The Philippine Deposit Insurance Corporation (PDIC) insures deposits up to PHP 1,000,000 per depositor, per bank, effective March 15, 2025. If you have more than that, spread it across different banks.
Step 2: Build the ladder
Rung 1: Wallet money (1 to 2 weeks of spending)
Keep only what you will spend soon in your e-wallet or debit account. It earns little or nothing, and that is fine; its job is convenience.
Rung 2: Emergency fund (3 to 6 months of essential expenses)
This needs to be safe and reachable within a day. An insured high-interest savings account is a good home. Base rates we checked on 2026-11-04:
| Platform | Product | Base rate p.a. | Key condition | As of |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Traditional bank example | BPI Regular Savings | 0.0625% | 0.0625% p.a., earns only when daily balance is at least PHP 5,000; PHP 3,000 to open. | 2026-11-04 |
| Salmon | Salmon Save | 4% p.a. | 4% p.a. | 2026-11-04 |
| OwnBank | Own It savings | 3.8% p.a. | 3.8% p.a., interest accrues daily, PHP 1 minimum, subject to change at OwnBank's discretion. | 2026-11-04 |
| UNO Digital Bank | #UNOready Savings | 3.50% p.a. | 3.00% below PHP 5,000; 3.50% from PHP 5,000 to below PHP 5M; 1.00% from PHP 5M. | 2026-11-04 |
| Tonik | Solo Stash / Group Stash | 3.25% p.a. | Solo Stash 3.25% p.a. | 2026-11-04 |
| MariBank | MariBank Savings (formerly SeaBank) | 3.25% p.a. | 3.25% p.a. | 2026-11-04 |
| Maya | Maya Savings (Maya Bank) | 3% p.a. base | 3% p.a. | 2026-11-04 |
| GoTyme Bank | GoalSave | 3.0% p.a. | Up to 5 GoalSaves, no missions per GoTyme. | 2026-11-04 |
| Komo | Komo Savings (by EastWest Rural Bank) | 2.5% p.a. | Komo savings page advertises 2.5%. | 2026-11-04 |
| GCash | GSave by CIMB | 2.30% p.a. | Base rate. | 2026-11-04 |
| CIMB Bank PH | UpSave / CIMB savings | 2.30% p.a. | CIMB advisory: 2.30% p.a. | 2026-11-04 |
Look for base rates, not just promo headlines. Maya Savings, for example, has a 3% base rate and boosts of up to 15% that apply only to the first PHP 100,000 and require monthly transaction missions. Do not spend money just to chase a higher rate.
Rung 3: Short-term goals (6 to 24 months)
For money you will not touch for a while, time deposits at digital banks may pay a bit more for locking the money in. Check penalties for early withdrawal.
Rung 4: Long-term money (5 years or more)
Money you will not need for years can go into longer-term options such as Pag-IBIG MP2, Retail Treasury Bonds, or index funds and UITFs. These have different risks and rules; see our guides and the cheat sheet. Do this only after Rung 2 is complete.
Step 3: Do the after-tax math
Interest on peso deposits of individuals is subject to a 20% final withholding tax. A 3.25% rate is about 2.6% in your pocket. Our Idle Money Compounder shows after-tax growth for any amount.
Step 4: Check every month
Rates move. Tonik cut its Solo Stash rate from 4% to 3.25% on October 19, 2026. CIMB moved GSave from 2.60% to 2.30% on June 1, 2026. Put a monthly reminder to check your rate, and move only if the difference matters for your balance.
Common mistakes
- Keeping the emergency fund in the same wallet you spend from.
- Putting more than PHP 1,000,000 in one bank.
- Chasing promo rates that need spending you would not do anyway.
- Forgetting the 20% tax when comparing.
- Skipping Rung 2 to "invest" money you might need next month.
