If you are paid every day, like many drivers, vendors, delivery riders and freelancers, the usual advice to "save 20% of your salary" does not fit. There is no fixed salary. Some days are great, some are zero. Here is a system that works with that reality.
Step 1: Find your monthly "must pay" number
Add up only the essentials for one month: rent, food, utilities, transport, school costs, loan minimums, load. Not wants. If it is PHP 18,000, your 3-month emergency fund target is PHP 54,000.
That number can feel huge. Do not worry. We build it in stages.
Step 2: Set three mini-targets
- Starter buffer: one week of essentials (here, about PHP 4,500).
- One month: PHP 18,000.
- Three months: PHP 54,000.
Celebrate each one. Most emergencies, like a sick day, a broken phone or a vehicle repair, are covered by the first two.
Step 3: Save daily, by percentage
Every evening, move a fixed percentage of the day's earnings into savings before anything else. Start with 5% to 10%. On a PHP 1,200 day, 10% is PHP 120. On a slow PHP 400 day it is PHP 40. The habit matters more than the amount.
Use the "good day rule": on days above your average, save double the percentage. Good days pay for slow days.
Step 4: Separate it from your spending money
If the emergency fund sits in the same wallet you use for gas and food, it will get spent. Use a separate savings product, ideally in a different app or bank from your daily wallet. A little friction is good.
Step 5: Make it earn, safely
Emergency money must be safe and quick to reach, so do not put it in stocks or crypto. An insured digital bank savings account is a good fit. Base rates we checked on 2026-11-04 include MariBank at 3.25% (up to PHP 1M), Tonik Solo Stash at 3.25%, GoTyme GoalSave at 3.0% and GSave by CIMB at 2.30%, compared with 0.0625% at a typical big-bank regular savings account (BPI example). PDIC insures deposits up to PHP 1,000,000 per depositor, per bank. Interest is subject to 20% final tax.
See every option on the platforms page.
Step 6: Protect it with rules
- It is only for real emergencies: health, income loss, urgent repairs, family crises.
- A sale, a new phone or a party is not an emergency.
- If you use it, refill it first before any other saving goal.
How long will it take?
At an average PHP 1,000 a day with 25 working days and 10% saved, you save about PHP 2,500 a month. One month of essentials (PHP 18,000) takes a little over 7 months; three months takes about 22 months, a bit less with the "good day rule" and interest. That is normal. Two years from now you will have something most households do not: breathing room.
What to do on zero days
Some days you will earn nothing: rain, a breakdown, no bookings. Do not touch the emergency fund for normal slow days. That is what your weekly spending buffer in the wallet is for. Keep one to two days of essentials in the wallet at all times so a single zero day does not become an "emergency". The fund is for the big hits, not the normal ups and downs of daily income.
Speed it up
- Save part of any windfall, like holiday tips or a big job.
- Cut one recurring expense and redirect it daily.
- Sell one thing you do not use.
